Mourinho: ‘I’m super happy’ ahead of the Europa League final

Sevilla aim for a record-extending seventh Europa League title when they take on Roma in the final of the 2022/23 competition in Budapest tonight.

The Spanish side have struggled domestically this year and have spent most of their La Liga campaign fending off relegation, but have performed exceptionally in Europe. José Luis Mendilibar is their third manager of the season, but he has orchestrated wins over big-name teams like Juventus and Manchester United en route to tonight’s final.

Sevilla will face a Roma who are looking to seal back-to-back European titles after their victory in the Europa Conference League last season. José Mourinho’s side won the inaugural tournament of the third European competition last year and are now one win away from qualifying for the Champions League. Victory in tonight’s final would also make Mourinho the first manager to win the Europa League with three different clubs, following previous triumphs with Porto and Manchester United.

Follow all the action of the clash between Seville and Roma in the Europa League final:

Seville 0-0 Rome

12 minutes: Save! Leonardo Spinazzola starts the play with a pass over Paulo Dybala. He carries the ball down the right side before joining Zeki Celik in the box.

The ball drifts back to the left side, where Spinazzola runs to the pass and kicks a first down straight at goal, leaving Bono with a comfortable save to his right.

Pellegrini on Roma’s tactical approach

Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini explained how his team intends to approach tonight’s final saying: “Knowing how to approach a game tactically does not mean attacking like crazy and letting your opponent score.

“For me, to approach the game in a tactically correct way is to try to limit your opponent. We look at all the teams and try to figure out how to contain his strengths.

“We did it because we are in the final. Sacrificing yourself and doing an extra run for your teammate is not leaving the bus in front of the goal but wanting to be here”.

Rakitic’s pre-match thoughts

Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic said: “The manager has been very clear from the start about what he wants. This will not change tomorrow.

“We have to be ourselves. When we say that no one loves competition like we do, it’s not because some bright spark in the club offices said so. It’s because we think that way.

“We have to play the perfect game and win the cup and take it home.”

Will Tammy emulate José?

England forward Tammy Abraham is bidding to become the first player to win the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. And she would be doing it in successive years.

He won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2020/21, although he did not play in the final against Manchester City, before lifting the Europa Conference League with Roma last year.

Only José Mourinho, as a coach, has won all three trophies. Will Abraham become the second person to lay hands on all three?
