Neil Gaiman reflected on his and Guillermo del Toro’s release for a doctor strange movie.
Years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was established with Jon Favreau Iron Man, Neil Gaiman and Guillermo del Toro had an interest in bringing Doctor Strange to life on the big screen. So much so, that they even proposed an idea for the film to Kevin Feige.
Neil Gaiman is currently experiencing a lot of notoriety thanks to the Netflix adaptation of his acclaimed comic series, The Sandman. With a resurgence of interest in his work, naturally, some are curious about how projects with the world’s biggest franchise, Marvel, may have crossed his path. Well, during an appearance on The Josh Horowitz Show Happy Sad Confused podcast, reflected on its launch for that would have had Guillermo del Toro directing:
“Kevin and I have talked several times over the years about things. The only one I wish, although I probably think the way they did it commercially was better than… but I remember back in 2007 I had minimalist conversations with Kevin Feige about ‘What about Doctor Strange?’ Then I talked to Guillermo del Toro, and Guillermo and I had these ideas about Doctor Strange and we started the beginning, I started the beginning of the conversation with Kevin about ‘I could do Doctor Strange with Guillermo.’ And basically, they said ‘We just want to focus on the main characters right now.’ Doctor Strange is way over the line, we don’t want to go there.
Neil Gaiman also revealed the kind of Doctor Strange story he and Guillermo Del Toro were pitching:
“There was some great stuff in it. What I liked most about Doctor Strange was the idea of… all we really wanted to do was have his adventures, him becoming an alcoholic and a disabled doctor, all that kind of stuff happening in the 1920s. , the idea is that he went through all of that and the training to become the world’s greatest wizard, maybe in his early 30’s, late 20’s, and he’s been living in Greenwich Village for 90 years looking the same in his place, and no one really notices. We just liked that idea, and he would have been out of time. But other than that, he would have been kind of Steve Ditko, because, you know, that’s the best thing.”
