There are plenty of great new releases coming out of the big studios, including an absolutely massive Magic: The Gathering established in collaboration with Lord of the Rings, but I’m very excited about the indie games starting to be given out as Zine Quest rewards. Here are more independent releases for you to check out!
New releases: Winter Town, Curiosities, Outliers, Flow Shapes Fables
“In winter town, you will create family members and travel through the strange world together. You will play as family members on the run through the Riverlands. Scroll to the winter town—a magical metropolis. Elegant rules, evocative prompts, and inspiring images help guide your unique story. Family members will age and die, traditions will be passed down from one generation to the next, and you will find new traditions that will change your family over time. winter town captures the refugee and immigrant experience in a fantastical and magical setting.
“The game takes place on two intricate and beautiful canvas maps: The River Scroll and City Map. You’ll use the Lore Cards and narrative prompts to create a rich and immersive story. One-time or campaign game. No game master. Fully collaborative. A spiritual successor is the beloved Fall of Magic.”
“Curiosities: Albrecht Manor is an epistolary horror mystery experience. A haunting story told through a series of letters and ephemera.
Reality contains fractures, a series of anomalous events that defy explanation, and only remnants of their occurrences remain. Letters, recordings, photos and reports are all that remains of these phenomena, housed in the Archive, a catalog of the extraordinary and peculiar. Our first collection is calamitous events connected across the centuries: The Affair at Albrecht Manor.”
“Atypical values is a single player journaling game where you play as a research assistant trying to do his job in an absurd environment. Recruit participants, collect data, and perform various tasks in the lab before the study runs out of funds. Keeping your job shouldn’t be hard when your participants are clones, time travelers, and cryptids… right?
“Fluxform Fables is a rapid-learning tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) about shapeshifters sent to different worlds by their all-seeing patron Mr. Oxluff. His divine mission: disrupt the course of history and wreak enough chaos to please his enigmatic patron. To play, you need at least one random character creator, called a FluxForm, a standard 52-card poker deck (or a 78-card tarot deck), one player to play as the storyteller, and at least two players to play as the shapeshifters. .
Fundraising: on his mycelial throne, Insurgent, ether nexus, Monsters!
“on his mycelial throne is a high level fungal horror adventure guide designed for use in Down We Go, but can be used in any old school style fantasy game. The overall plot works on the idea that your playgroup has at least 8-12 sessions under their belt before they take on Zaadha, Queen of Rot, an ancient figure from Infinopolis history. The adventure includes notes on how to seed the book’s ideas into the adventure ahead, and examples of fun adventures you could go on before Mycelial Throne.
“Welcome to Insurgent, the action-packed tabletop RPG that puts you and your friends at the heart of a thrilling rebellion against tyranny. In this game, you will become a member of a group of rebels fighting against the oppressive forces, and each mission can turn the tide in your favor. As you embark on daring adventures, you will create your own unique setting and decide whether to fight in a fantastical kingdom, a modern city, or futuristic landscapes.”
“Ether Nexus is a mecha and magic fantasy TTRPG powered by Wick’s Trick. Discover a high fantasy world torn apart by calamity and preserved by ethereal knights clad in artifact armor. Inspired by properties like escaflowne, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Dunbine Aura Battler, ether nexus features a comprehensive ruleset, unique player options to customize etheric knights and their Apparatus, and a host of Game Master tools to help build harrowing adventures in an exciting fantasy setting.”
